It is isolated in the Eastern Oregon desert outback and is located in the middle of nowhere. The put in boat ramp for the Lower Owyhee section is located in the tiny town of Rome, Oregon, population around 50. There are definitely more cows in this region than there are people.
Scenic, Remote, and WildThe Owyhee River begins its journey from its headwaters in Northern Nevada. This is one of the few rivers that actually winds its way north instead of south to its confluence with the Snake River on the Oregon-Idaho border. The name Owyhee sounds strangley similar to the name “Hawaii”. Actually, the name Owyhee is an old fashioned spelling of Hawaii. In the 1800's the Owyhans came over to the mainland from Hawaii to try to find work as trappers and join in on exploring expeditions. The Owyhee snakes its way downstream through volcanic gorges and valleys of ash and sedimentary rock. Hot springs are numerous through the Owyhee River canyon attesting to the volcanic forces located underground. Volcanic eruptions occured in this area as recently as 5000 years ago. Spring River TripsOne of the challenges of rafting the Owyhee River besides the remote nature of the river is lack consistent water flows. Because this river is located in a dry desert region it has unpredictable snowmelt and runoff. The Owyhee typically runs through February through the end of May with rare flows through mid June. Lower flows in June allow for smaller crafts such as inflatable kayaks and canoes to navigate the river. The Lower Owyhee is our “Grand Canyon”. It is truly grand and one of the most spectacular river trips that we guide. We spend 5 to 6 days rafting, kayaking, hiking, and soaking in hot springs. Let us show you why rafting and kayaking in the Owyhee River canyon is one of most awe inspring river trips in the U.S. Remember that recreating is all about escaping and relaxing and the Owyhee River is the place to do it! We'll see you on the river! |
