The rapids were exciting, but what excited these little paddlers even more was all of the wildlife we saw that morning on the Klamath River. It started out with a turtle. I've seen turtles on this run every time I've rowed it, but what excites me is how excited they get at seeing the Western pond turtle. Next, we saw a great blue heron with its prehistoric body. The GBH as we call them are always impressive. Next we saw an amazing sight...four little brown heads swimming right in front of our raft. They were river otters and they dove and played right in front of the raft until they took off down the river. It is always exciting to see otters on the river. Then we thought we had seen all the wildlife we were going to see on the river on this beautiful July morning, but we were wrong. We rounded another corner and on the side of the river we saw a mama deer and her baby with the white spots that looked just like Bambi. What a treat!
All of the class 2 rapids excited the young rafters, but what excited them more as well as myself was all of the wildlife that we saw that morning. What a special treat and it may not be duplicated just like that again.
