I've been a raft guide for many years now and never once have I experienced my birthday on the river. Well, sure, there have been birthday rafting trips but not on the exact day I was born. This 3 day river trip down the Lower Klamath in mid April I was really looking forward to.
Up until the week before April 18th the weather forecast was a little wacky. Rain, snow, hail, and maybe sun was what the weather man said, but as we know the weather man isn't always right. As the day drew near to depart on our trip the weather looked better and better. My excitement grew because I knew that the weather gods were going to be with me on my day of birth. As we departed Ashland our high hopes weren't so hopeful. The sky was grey, the air was damp, and the air temperature was in the 50's. The weather man did say that it was supposed to get really warm for the weekend. I had faith in him.
We reached the river put in at Happy Camp and our spirits soared. The sun was out and the temperature got warmer by the minute! The high temperature on our trip topped out at 80 degrees! We headed down the river with no mishaps. We scouted Rattlesnake and Dragon's Tooth. Dragon's Tooth rapid was the trickiest rapid on our trip, but fortunately the rapid was runnable on the right low water channel. All of the rafts made it safely through this typically Class 4 rapid. The Klamath River is located in the Pacific Flyway, meaning that it is home to an abundance of birds such as bald eagles, blue herons, green herons, and many more. We got to see our fair share of all of them.
Besides all of the rapids we encountered on our journey what we really were here for on the Lower Klamath River was relaxation. Matt and I slept under the stars (mainly because we forgot the tent poles), lounged around camp in the morning drinking coffee and tea, drank wine in the evening, ate birthday blackberry cobbler, and told stories around the campfire at night. We also made new friends on this river trip and for all of this I am truly thankful for having such an incredible birthday! Thanks also to Mr. Weatherman for being right this time!
