What an amazing whirlwind the end of June and July 4th weekend have been! We spent 4 days soaking in the hot Northern California sun on the Lower Klamath River with some of our favorite rafters, the Arapoff group! This was their third year in a row paddling on the river with us and it was a blast as usual!
Scorching early summer temperatures made for the perfect time to float in the river, spray the Super Soaker water guns, and bathe in the warm waters of the Klamath River. We ate delicious meals and desserts and let me tell you eat, drink, and be merry was the motto of this spectacular river trip. As we hung out at our last camp of the trip, Rock Creek, we had an unexpected visitor who decided to join our camp. A black lab swam downstream past our camp then made his way to shore. We weren't sure if he belonged to some other rafters, if he was lost, or if he got dumped by someone who was hit hard by the economy. We didn't know what this dog's name was so we started calling him "Buddy River". He perked up every time he heard his name so we assumed that his name was something similar to our made up name that we had given him.
We spent out last night on the river at Rock Creek and listened to the roar of this crystal clear stream all night long. The next day we headed on downstream for our last day on the Klamath River to our destination- Stuart's Bar with a big black lab as our companion. After unpacking and hitting the road we headed in to Somes Bar, California to find out if anyone knew who this big, fuzzy creature belonged to. No one seemed to have any clue who he belonged to. We also got the same answer in Happy Camp. This quickly became a very perplexing situation. Do we leave the dog to some random person in Happy Camp that possibly could dump the dog again? Or do we take him back to Ashland to live with Amy, Zach, and Duke? The decision was made that "Buddy River" was going to head home to live with the Arapoff's in Ashland until someone claimed him.
This was a pretty interesting end to an amazing river trip! We had super hot weather, lots of swimming in the river, bathing in Rock Creek, ate a lot, and drank a lot. What more could you ask for on a river rafting adventure? I had an incredible time and made some great friends that I will not forget.
By the way, "Buddy River" was claimed by his rightful owner, a guy who lived about a mile from Rock Creek. His real name was "Bubba Jones". It was a happy ending after all.
